OCASI Organizes Youth Presentation to UNCRC Representative

OCASI worked with several young people, supporting them to prepare and deliver a presentation on issues of child and youth rights, to Ms. Marta Maurás, the Country Representative from the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This was one of many presentations made at an event organized by the Canadian Council of Child and Youth Advocates (CCCYA), on the occasion of the UNCRC representative’s visit to Canada. The presentation gave participating youth the unique opportunity to directly address the UNCRC, and to connect with other youth at the event.

The visit coincided with Canada’s 3rd and 4th periodic review of its implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It provided the Country Representative, and by extension the Committee, a significant opportunity to meet with government representatives, NGOs, and other stakeholders to engage in dialogue and joint planning for the continuing advancement of children’s rights and well-being in Canada.

As part of her visit, Ms. Maurás asked to hear directly from children and youth about their lives and their rights in Canada and answer questions from them regarding the Committee’s recommendations for Canada. During her time in Canada, the Ontario Office of the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth hosted Ms. Maurás in Toronto on behalf of the CCCYA. CCCYA_UN_Media_Release-Final.pdf
