LASI and OCASI Statement on the death of Abdirahman Abdi

[La version française se trouve plus loin.]

Ottawa/July 28, 2016 - Local Agencies Serving Immigrants (LASI) – Ottawa and OCASI – Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants are deeply concerned and saddened by the death of Abdirahman Abdi.

We extend our deepest condolences to Abdi’s family, friends and community. As community organizations that work with and support newcomers to settle in their new lives, we are here first and foremost to offer them support at this difficult time.

Abdirahman Abdi lived in the OCISO Non-Profit Housing apartment building along with his family. They are known to OCISO employees and are valued members of our community.

Abdi’s death and the manner of his passing has left our clients, communities as well as employees in a state of grief and shock. We are especially concerned about the impact on the Somali and other refugee and immigrant communities, and their sense of safety and security as they build a new life in this country. In that context, we cannot ignore the questions that have arisen about use of force and the socially significant intersections of refugee background, race and mental health.

We know and value Ottawa as a cohesive and caring community, yet this painful loss reminds us that we have work to do. We particularly need to affirm that Ottawa values the fundamental human rights and dignity of all its residents, particularly those who are vulnerable or marginalized.

We welcome the Ottawa Police Services pledge to an open dialogue with the Somali community and OCISO following this tragedy. We ask our communities to unite in an effort to gain clarity on what happened, starting with a full and transparent investigation by the government.

LASI is a non-profit community coalition consisting of 11 agencies serving immigrants in the Ottawa area whose mission is to advance the social and economic integration of immigrants and refugees and ensure co-operation and collaboration among partner agencies.

OCISO has been providing comprehensive settlement and integration services to the Ottawa community since 1978.

OCASI is the provincial umbrella organization and collective voice for immigrant and refugee serving agencies in Ontario.
